Mo Salah is Considering Quitting the Egyptian National Team

A nation holds its breath as a source close to Salah suggests that he's had it with the Egyptian FA.

In the latest fallout to Egypt’s, let’s say, ‘disappointing’ World Cup run, rumours suggest that Mo Salah could be on the verge of quitting the Egyptian national team.

According to CNN, a source close to the Liverpool star has allegedly revealed that the reigning African, PFA and English Football Writers’ Player of the Year for 2017/2018 is disillusioned by what seems to have started as a forced meeting and photo opportunity with Chechnya leader, Ramzan Kadyrov, during one of Egypt’s training sessions.

The pictures that circulated sparked plenty of controversy in light of Kadyrov’s much discussed human rights abuses, but the flames were fanned further this weekend, when Kadyrov made Salah an ‘honorary citizen of the Chechen Republic’ with a special gala dinner.

Subsequently, CNN has stated that, according to the unnamed source, Salah feels somewhat exposed and used by Kadyrov and, ultimately, the Egyptian Football Association, as he has no interest in engaging in "topics beyond football or to be used for anyone's political image."

This is not the first time that Salah has been at odds with local football authorities. In the run-up to the World Cup, he found himself in a commercial dispute with the Egyptian Football Association after his image was used prominently on the national team’s plane next to the logo of telecommunications firm, WE, putting him in breach of a contract he has with rival company, Vodafone.

The news has already sent shockwaves around the country, as Egypt holds its breath for the future of a man who has become an icon, not only here, but across the world.
