Sahel season is almost here and we're always on the lookout for new fashion trends. One thing we didn't expect, however, is to be looking to to the underappreciated craft of crocheting to add a little style to our beach outfits. Egyptian brand, Colorful Yarns, is catering to our inner beach flirt with colourful knitted designs that also work great as a bikini cover-up. Founded by Amira Abed, Colorful Yarns has everything from knitted crop tops, to gorgeous knitted swimsuits, to cute clutches for all of our seaside shenanigans.
“I've been knitting since I was a kid and I’d always gift my friends and family the things I’d make,” Abed told CairoScene. “I decided to turn it into a business because I think what makes something unique is the fact that it’s handmade, that I make these designs with my own two hands so there's something personal about them.”
Selling her gorgeous pieces on Instagram, as well as on other online platforms like Mitcha, Bespoke and InBoutique, Colourful Yarns also showcases its one-of-a-kind designs at El Gouna’s Berries Boutique and Maadi’s La Maison Blanche. For Abed, knitted tops and clutches retain an element of nostalgia which she adds an modern twist to.
"Knitting reminds me of my mum and my grandma because crochet, knitting and trico were very popular back in the day. I grew up watching my grandmother and my mother knitting and doing all these handcrafts," says Abed. "So I try to create designs that are at once nostalgic and modern."
